Thank you for visiting the home of Louise Butt Designs. Here you'll discover knitting and crochet patterns that I have designed for magazines and books in the past. You'll also find details of my knitting workshops and be able to purchase patterns of my designs in PDF or printed format.

About me
I started knitting at the tender age of seven when my mum opened up a yarn shop in the beautiful Cornish fishing village of Mevagissey. With time on my hands in the holidays I worked my way through stitch dictionaries, using up the yarn colours that weren't popular with our customers. I soon discovered I could design and make clothes that actually fit my Barbie and was particularly impressed with a boob tube and hot pant combo in a metallic silver yarn that she wore for quite a few years.
When I was 10 I worked on my first real design with my wonderful and talented mum, a stunning patchwork effect cardigan which she knitted up and sold as soon as it was on the hanger. We lost count of how many we made and sold in the following years. There must be a picture of it somewhere in the boxes and boxes of photos that she left me.

It wasn't until I was pregnant with my daughter, after a 10-year hiatus from knitting, that I picked up some needles and yarn to make her a little jacket to take her home in. My love of the craft was re-awakened, and further fuelled when I joined the launch team of Simply Knitting magazine in 2005. Between editorial deadlines and bringing up children I found time to design projects for the magazine, and contributed to a couple of knitting books Weekend Knitting (titled Complete Knitting in the US) and Knitted Sock Sensations.

In 2007 I became the co-owner of Yarn Forward magazine, and subsequently launched Sew Hip and Inside Crochet magazines, contributing content and designs. In 2009, I sold my shares in the company to concentrate on my knitwear designs, writing my first novel and bringing up my two beautiful children.

Thank you for coming to the site, which is currently in its infancy and as I learn more about creating websites, and blogs and all things technical I hope that it will become more packed.

Take care and happy knitting
